there is this qoute that says The hardest hearts once wanted to be held—they just never learned how. And that line does something quiet but violent to me. Because it reminds me that avoidant people aren’t cold by nature, they’re careful by survival. People with avoidant attachment don’t run because they don’t feel. They run because they feel TOO MUCH and never had a safe place to put it. Somewhere along the way, needing someone became embarrassing, frr. Wanting closeness became dangerous. So they learned control instead. Distance instead. Independence so sharp it almost looks like pride. They mastered the art of not reaching. And that’s what moves something in me about this quote. It makes me see the tenderness behind the tension. The softness buried under “I’m fine.” or anything else like tht. The child-version of them that once wanted to be chosen, held, reassured, but maybe got silence instead. Or inconsistency. Or love that felt conditional.
Avoidant people don’t lack love—I'm being for real. They lack practice in receiving it.
And if I’m honest? Maybe that’s why it hits. Because I see parts of myself in that. The way I don’t ask. The way I act unbothered. The way I convince myself I don’t need reassurance even when I do. It’s easier to be the strong one. The unreadable one. The one who leaves first.
But this quote cracks that armor a little.
It reminds me that hardness is often just unheld softness.
And maybe the bravest thing an avoidant heart can do isn’t loving someone — it’s letting themselves be loved.

as a healing avoidant: if I reject you in a kind way and stay friendly (no blocking etc), I'm not interested in you. if I push you away, play games and/or other forms of cruel behavior I have feelings for you but I'm uncomfortable about that for some reason

As an avoidant, it is very true. But lately I've realize that they have feelings also, they also feel the same way as us. Sometimes they are also hurt the way we act like that.

I will never forgive the avoidant who ruined my perception of love. He told me I made him feel like he could love again. He made me feel like I couldn’t.

As an avoidant honestly this isn’t true, if I avoid you I’m ok with not seeing you again. I will make some effort if I really care.

to me, it doesn't make sense. Why run away from the love you crave for? The love you've always wanted? Why push that love away from you and still expect it to be there for you? You crave, yearn and look for love and the second it's there you run away then crave, yearn and look for it again. It's a cycle. So for me, having this " avoidant attachment " is a choice. Yes, it may be a trauma response but it happens because you let it happen. You distance yourself from what you have always yearned for because you choose to do so.

sometimes we avoid people we care about the most bc we are scared of getting hurt, or something going wrong so we avoid something or someone that we care abt bc when we care we are are vulnerable and at risk of being able to get hurt. So instead of taking that risk and trusting that they won’t hurt u, we begin to avoid you bc we think it’s better to not try and have our feelings protected and be safe then risking getting hurt but at the cost of things possibly working out
