@alexuscazares: Being a marine biologist can look very different depending on the ecosystem you work in and what topics you study. I’m a biological oceanographer by training, and my research focuses on the open ocean, specifically the deep sea. I go out on research cruises and collect zooplankton using large nets that are lowered thousands of meters into the water (not scuba diving 🤿). In 2021, I spent over 100 days at sea doing all of my fieldwork. Since then, most of my PhD has been spent in the lab using molecular tools (DNA), sorting samples under a microscope, analyzing data on a computer, and doing A LOT of writing. I study zooplankton from the sea surface down to just above the sea floor to establish an ecological baseline in an area threatened by deep-sea mining. Because mining is rapidly advancing, we need to understand who’s there, how these communities function, and what might be at risk before mining begins. Marine biology isn’t one thing.
