Have you looked to see what's under the carpet? Maybe you'll get lucky with hardwood. I would refurbish the kitchen cabinets. They look like real solid wood. Sand and paint/stain.

If you are going to paint I would paint before you take the carpet up. That way you don't have to worry about the new floor getting paint on the floor.
