@bdccarpenter: The myth of discipline. It is commonly believed that if someone struggles to go to the gym, they are lacking discipline. But this feels shallow, because “discipline” (if you want to call it that) in one area of someone’s life does not always resemble discipline in other areas. I exercise a lot, but that doesn’t mean I have more discipline than someone who doesn’t. A lot of the time, people who struggle to go to the gym are using up their energy and mental bandwidth on other tasks. I’m so glad you mention this. I have trouble applying discipline to going to the gym or doing whatever else. I have wild work ethic, worked 100 hour weeks and I don’t switch off, I’m never late, I hardly have time off (which I should, I know) but I just can’t kick-start going to the gym or doing other things.

Yeah. I am a couch potato. I have however studied a looong time and worked very hard to become a doctor. I don't think my lack of muscle tone negates that.

having kids can mean you can "go to the gym" just by playing with them. chasing them around- cardio. picking them up and down- weights. wrestling with them- cardio and weights at the same time plus endurance.

This is why I loath people who say "We all have the same 24 hours in a day" .. no, no we don't!

Thank you for talking about this! I think the problem is people assume and judge that the only reason people don’t go to the gym or workout is because of lack of discipline or that they are lazy. It’s so much more than that. Fear and anxieties around gym, body image issues, perfectionism mindset, life circumstances, etc. Yet even the health and fitness industry put shame on people if they are not “consistent”

As a mom who works 50-60+ hours a week and has 2 kids, yes it is SO hard. I don’t always make it to my workout and I need to remind myself constantly that I’m making a huge effort and it’s OK if I can’t do 100% of my training plan. It’s impossible to not compare yourself with everyone around you and how fast they’re improving (I’m currently training for a half marathon) but then I remember their situation is VERY different from

I don’t think it’s self discipline, it’s prioritising. He prioritises his family over getting in shape, n he probably has better family relationships than his peers. There’s no right or wrong, it’s just what r important to someone

That’s why I go to the gym at 4:30am. I get an hour in and then go to work for 6am. I’m back home at 5pm, spend time with my wife and kids, then put the kids to bed. Then my wife and I spend quiet time together before we both crash at 9pm (we’re both up by 4am). It’s tiring but we do everything we can to support one another having our individual time. On non gym mornings, we sleep longer 🤞

In the first place we have to distinguish people that have exercise in their job description like personal trainers, dancers, athletes, actors... they need to incorporate exercise in their job description, and yes, some of them work long hours, but their livelihood and career progression depends on it. You have to have more gim time than I do. I "only" have to work out for my health and happiness. A librarian has to read a lot. I can read stuff that makes me happy or otherwise fulfilled. If I don't like or see the value of the book I'm reading I'll put it down and never look at it again. The librarian has to be able to recommend books no matter personal preference.

Doing a 90 minute workout everyday is easy compared to being a parent (not that it’s a competition). Parents need to take a moment to practice some self love and appreciation

My husband and I had to buy weights to workout at home. Because I absolutely could not get to the gym. It wasted 2 hours. Where I can go downstairs and it’s an hour.

Everyone doesn’t need to go out to a gym… maybe just buy a few free weights. I did that for years and built muscle. Now I have a smith machine and I love it. Maybe still need to look for the time but more doable than going out to a gym.

I thought that I lack willpower. Only to realise later on in life that so much willpower of mine was locked on to certain areas of my life, there wasn’t much left for the things I thought I need willpower for.

Totally agree, I really underestimated how "easy" training was for me when I was childless in my early 20s, I basically just did what I wanted (Flexi time job) now it is so much harder and I am lucky that I have a easy kid that goes to bed fairly early and am a person who likes late workouts.

I have started a walk/run routine and it’s been so difficult to maintain. I needed to hear this. I felt less than because I couldn’t even see myself going to a gym so “settled” on the walk run program.
