When my ex husband and I were breaking up he said “you’ve been at home with the kids all these years, I’m not going to just leave you high and dry” He paid all bills while I went to school and got a good job. I let him know when I got my first paycheck and I took over the light bill. As I continued in my job and getting checks I took over bills. He took care of the mother of his children until I could fully be on my own. I have always appreciated that.

As a divorce attorney, I see this all of the time. They ask if not demand the wife stays home and then turn it around and act like it was some detriment to them and their finances and paint the person who provided years of domestic labor as a leech. It is terrible

My ex-husband continued to pay for absolutely everything because he wanted me to stay home with the kids even though we didn't work out. He did that until I found my husband and they are now best friends.

Is this common in America? In my part of Thailand if a woman is a stahm and the husband divorces her she gets everything. House, cars, motorcycles, cash, savings, kids, any farming property etc.

My ex-husband told me our house was his once during an argument. Thats all it took for me to finish my degree, climb that corporate ladder, and eventually make more money than him. It felt so good to leave that life behind and be able to purchase my own house! Proudest moment.

My grandmother who had a seemingly lovely marriage told me to come sit with her in the bathroom one evening while she was doing her nightly routine. I was 13. In between moisturizing swipes she said “baby your parents will never be able to send you to college. They won’t ever have the money. You need to work hard and make good grades so you can get scholarships and grants so you can get an education. You need to get a job; and you need to make sure that you don’t ever share money with a man. If you do, keep a separate bank account he doesn’t have access to and make sure that account has enough money to support you for 6 months minimum”…..she was right.

When you decide together that one parent stays home, you need a legal contract (in case of divorce) and a life insurance. Staying at home for longer than one or two years can lead to lifelong financial dependency.

Im so serious when I say any woman who agrees to be a sahm needs a post up in writing. In the event he divorces you, you wont be left with no money, no retirement, and a massive gap in your resume. Being a sahm is an insane job but it comes with so little protections.
