This is a hand dynamometer, and it's one of the more useful things in my clinic. ✋🏽📶 You squeeze it and it measures force in kilograms or pounds. It's used heavily in research because it's quick, inexpensive and reliable — and because grip strength works as a proxy for overall muscular strength rather than just hand strength. Clinically I use it for two things. First, comparing sides. A meaningful difference between your two hands is a flag, and it often points toward nerve involvement rather than a problem in the hand itself. Second, tracking over time. If your grip has declined, that becomes a number rather than a feeling. Normal ranges vary considerably by age and sex, so a single reading in isolation means less than the comparison between your hands or the change in your own numbers.
