@sacramentourbanmedia916: Donald Trump said Friday that he plans to move ahead with requiring voter identification for the November midterm elections, even if Congress does not approve the measure, as related legislation faces steep odds in the Senate. “There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social. He added that he also supports requiring proof of citizenship to vote and limiting mail-in ballots, allowing only select exceptions. Mr. Trump has repeatedly alleged, without substantiated evidence, that widespread voter fraud has benefited Democrats. Studies and investigations have consistently found that cases of noncitizen voting are extremely rare and already prohibited under federal law. In a separate post, the president said he intends to outline his legal rationale in an upcoming executive order. “This is an issue that must be fought, and must be fought, NOW!” he wrote. “If we can’t get it through Congress, there are legal reasons why this SCAM is not permitted. I will be presenting them shortly, in the form of an Executive Order.” Election law specialists, however, have argued that the president does not have unilateral authority to alter federal election rules without congressional approval. A federal judge last year blocked a previous attempt by Mr. Trump to mandate proof of citizenship for voter registration through executive action. “Our Constitution entrusts Congress and the states — not the president — with the authority to regulate federal elections,” the judge wrote, noting that lawmakers were actively debating related proposals and that no statute grants the executive branch the power to bypass Congress through an executive order. Earlier in the week, the House approved a stringent voter identification proposal known as the SAVE America Act. Democrats have warned the bill could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters. The measure would require individuals registering to vote in federal elections to present documentary proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, in person. It would also mandate that voters show a photo ID when casting a ballot, with the identification required to reflect proof of citizenship. The bill is unlikely to advance in the Senate, where it would need 60 votes to overcome a filibuster threshold.#fyp #viral
