Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that commonly occurs in men as they age. ⭕Why It Matters: As the prostate enlarges, it can press on the urethra (the tube that carries urine out), causing: Weak urine stream Difficulty starting urination Frequent urination (especially at night) Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying BPH is not prostate cancer, but both conditions can cause urinary symptoms, which is why proper examination is important. 🩺A prostate examination is commonly done using a procedure called a Digital Rectal Examination (DRE). 🔍 How Prostate Examination Is Done Positioning The man may: Lie on his side with knees bent toward the chest, or Bend forward while standing. Preparation The healthcare provider wears gloves and applies lubricant to a finger. Insertion A lubricated, gloved finger is gently inserted into the rectum.
