We can’t afford to give up “African American” because of the history connected to it. Doing so will allow others to take credit for our historical contributions. They need to use the country they descend from, ie “Ghanian-American”.

I was clued in in my twenties when this African couple that I worked with was mourning the loss of Ronald Reagan when he passed away. Not that I celebrated his death, but they were putting on a show about how sad they were that he passed. My first real life experience of not all skin folk are kinfolk. Since then I've talked to many African people who have to spend a good 5 years in this country to realize what side their bread is buttered. They catch up, but sometimes it takes a minute.

the term African American wasn't a thing until 1980. they try to say we called ourselves African American in 1780 but if you had the opportunity to talk to older BA you'll know that it's not true.

I’d also argue that after the 2024 election, the erosion of a POC unity mindset in Black America further and helped fuel the push for delineation. It was already happening, but the election helped to accelerate it.
