Never put salt on the roof! Ice melt yes, salt will ruin your roof, this guy is going to do even more damage 🤦♂️

This seems like an exceedingly bad idea. I would never put salt (!) on a roof with shingles, or anywhere near bricks & mortar.

He's wrong... the warner weather water comes after the ice damn is already formed. The ice damn forms from the heat of the house melting the bottom layer of snow...it runs down and freezes when it hits the cold roof(overhang) forms a damn Then when the weather warms a little the water pools on that damn, backs up under the shingles and starts leaking. Him saying it all starts with the warm weather is wrong.... that would just drop off the edge and form ice cycles.👍

I put ice melt in nylon stockings. It worked really good. It melted grooves in the ice dam within four hours.

How does this happen? The areas in front of my gutters were melted before the rest of my roof. No issues

If the under layers of the shingles are done correctly, you don't have to go up and put up salt sleeves. I do roofing and siding.

And once you get the ice off fix the problem in the attic. Ice dams are caused when the insulation is covering the soffit. Pull the insulation back and install baffles. This allows proper airflow under the roof making it unlikely to get another ice dam

If you don't have icicles and water dripping off the roof, start to panic. I had a 6 inch build up this winter, no issues. When I shingles my roof 4 years ago I put 3 rows of ice and water shield.

insulate the attic,check your vapour barrier in the ceiling. and ventilate the attic
