@charmenglishcl: I’ve seen a lot of people talking about this after the Super Bowl halftime show because Bad Bunny made sure to get the message across that all of us who live in AMERICA (which includes all of the countries in North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America.) In case you live on another side of the world, you might not have heard of this discourse. As I mention in the video, when a person from the United States of America refers to themselves as American, this rubs a lot of people the wrong way. Something that makes this a bit more complicated for some people is that we don’t have another official demonym aside from “American”. People have tried to introduce unitedstatesian or usonian, but these words have not appeared organically and I’m not sure that they would ever catch on. For me personally, I prefer to avoid a demonym entirely because I don’t see myself as a “usonian”. That being said this isn’t actually much of an inconvenience in the grand scheme of things! I am more than happy o change the way I speak if it means coming across the way that I want to. The history of the US in America makes this not a simple grammar question, but one related to imperialism, power, and erasure. If you’re stuck in the mindset of refusal to change how you speak simply because of matters of grammar, I don’t really buy that. I encourage you to look deeper at what you gain from continuing to perpetuate US imperialism and what you lose by simply rephrasing how you say your nationality. I’ve made this change and now it honestly feels jarring to refer to myself as an American. What are your thoughts? Let me know!
