At a recent event marking the anniversary of the Greek Revolution, @President Donald J Trump linked the rise of the early Greek immigrants with the famous Greek-American diners. Yet today’s reality is different: the diner — the entrepreneurial dream of the first Greek immigrants — is fading, gradually at risk of disappearing, along with an entire generation. Hit by rising costs, iconic Greek diners appear to be on a one-way street, faced also with changing dietary habits, the reluctance of younger members of founding families to take over, and the broader challenges of modern small and medium-sized businesses. Indeed, a few years ago it was estimated that the number of diners in New York had declined by 60% in less than thirty years. At the same time, food prices have soared, and escalating insurance premiums have became unsustainable for many owners. The fate of Neptune Diner’s landmark Astoria location — which closed in July 2024 — reflects the broader changes reshaping the neighborhood. The diner was forced to vacate after zoning changes opened the property to redevelopment, paving the way for a new building complex, as has happened with other businesses in Astoria. 🔗 more info at thenationalherald.com — link in bio.
