I just watched the Elizabeth Smart documentary. She basically said due to purity culture - she thought her family wouldn't want her back because she was dirty now for what that man did to her... And it caused her to not run or call out for help for some time. How sad to me.

YES. I was 13 and got pulled in to the bishop’s office bc my skirt was too short and making the men uncomfortable. I went home and cried my eyes out bc I never was even thinking like that. I was so innocent. Not to mention if my parents let me come to church like that who the hell are they to say I should wear something different? I’ll never forget that hurt I felt.

The guilt and shame that was dumped on girls and women. I had a girl and boy twins and the pressure on my daughter compared to my son was incredible! I wish I’d left before and never put my kids through this weird game ! 😳

growing up as a boy in that culture, I constantly heard comments about how things (that were actually normal and not harmful) were immodest and inappropriate. those comments led to me seeing those things that way. seeing skin that my mom wouldn't approve of became exciting. I think a lot of men raised in this culture believe that conditioning to be natural and not weird.

I remember going to girls camp we weren't allowed to wear any open toed shoes bc some guys were helping out there, and our toes were apparently distracting for them......

I got kicked out a dance for wearing a mid thigh sweater dress with leggings under. I was so embarrassed. Another girl was there in a tutu and didn’t even get talked to. I’ve always been a curvy girl and to this day I know it had nothing to do with length. Me and my friend also got humiliated wearing our cheer outfit to seminary. Apparently we were distracting. Which is weird because we went to school with these boys and never was an issue before.

The rage I felt hearing this..🤬 I had so many similar experiences. I know now my reaction being guilt and shame at the time was taught. But it’s hard not feeling disappointed in myself for falling for the lie🤦🏻♀️

It is so sad and crazy. I remember denim skirts and flip flops being a huge deal at one point and it didn’t make sense why that was a problem.

I had a church leader who at a youth activity camp out thing told me I had to go change my shorts or he’d cancel the whole activity for everyone because I was making him and the other leaders/ young men uncomfortable. Mind you he did this IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. And they definitely weren’t even short shorts
