@speechprof: As someone who WAS born in poverty and made it out, I don’t know if I have ever seen a piece of advice from him that is based in the reality of the world we currently live in.
Spending $500 a month on diabetes supplies wasn’t exactly part of the plan

I think the real conversation is the poverty line being unreasonably low. Especially considering current rent and home prices.

I had no idea the poverty line was only 13k I feel like anything under 30k in this economy is poverty

Dave Ramsey still thinks $65,000 a year puts you in the upper middle class

“Outside of poverty in the middle class” doesn’t even make sense. Outside of poverty does not mean middle class.

And our poverty line is calculated based on the price of groceries in the 60s, adjusted for inflation. It doesn’t have any basis in current reality where housing and other expenses are way higher than the 60s. Poverty line should be 20k at least, probably higher.

‘Middle class’ is a term created by the wealthy to create division. There are only two ‘classes’: working class and the owner class. If you survive by trading your time and labor for income guess which one you fall into?

I did exactly that. Got married at 18 before having kids. Worked since age 14. Same for my husband. We bought a house at age 18 & 19 thanks to the housing market collapse (bought a foreclosure with an FHA loan). I have three college degrees in nursing. We did everything “right” and yet we live paycheck to paycheck just to exist. We aren’t taking crazy vacations or driving hugely expensive cars. Life is just that fucking expensive.

Shouldn’t minimum wage be like $60/hr by now to have kept up with inflation 😅 cuz I didn’t do those steps in order but make close to $60/hr and I still can’t afford jack shit 😂

I graduated high school. Started working right away. I got married at 26. I had a child at 30. I am barely surviving. I have no savings.

Bro in most cities the real poverty line is somewhere around 35-45k maybe even more.

To be at the bottom of what’s considered middle class, you need to make $29/hr. The distance between outside of poverty and middle class is huge.

I was furiously typing about college when you made your last point 😂 so I’ll just add to that- and you know what gets a lot of people to and through college: the community college system which is accessible and affordable! So again, it’s a systems issue- not a personal one

Get married and have children...both things I could never afford, because I was poor and am poor. There is no social mobility when you're working class and/or disabled.

Part of the fallacy of Dave’s argument over the last 10-15 years, the traditional entry-level jobs that teenagers would work (like fast food) aren’t offering the full time positions. They stack themselves with part-timers and keep them to 2-3 shifts a week. These kids today can’t get 40 hours a week from the employer and the employers keep a sharp eye out on the kids picking up hours to make sure they don’t do it often enough to force reclassification to full time.

Poverty income range in the US has not been adjusted to keep up with inflation. Realistically anything under 60k is poverty in most parts of USA.
