My mother in law threw herself two Awake Wakes (5 years apart) because she had similar sentiments about funerals, and wanted to attend her own.

we had a party for my partner who had terminal cancer about a month before he passed. We played his funeral songs toasted him and friends and family told stories until late at night. it was a chance for so many to say goodbye.

I love this so so much!!! I've always thought funerals or life celebrations are a bit late. I don't want everyone talking about how great I *was*. Buy me flowers and tell me now.

My best friend died of cancer far too young a few years ago. She wanted a living funeral and she turned too quick for us to give her one. I regret it every day.

For my husband’s 60th birthday we threw an Irish Wake themed party. He is not dead nor even sick. Just wanted people to share things while he is with us as I have no desire to have stories told when he dies but to leave me with MY personal memories. Had Irish food, drinks, music etc as you would at a traditional Irish Wake

Funerals aren't wasted on the living. memorials are the beginning of the bridge of grief one must walk across.

When my brother was alive, he used to write poems for family who have passed to read at their funeral. When he passed, I had different words popping in my mind while I was trying to sleep. I knew he wanted my to write him a poem, so I did. I read that poem at his funeral and slept like a baby that night. I’m sure Perry was happy with my effort.

Now see this is amazing! I don’t want a funeral at all. I hate them and I won’t put that on any of my children. Me I’d rather everyone get together and just tell funny stories about me. Trust there are many. I’m 59 and I have a too many autoimmune diseases and several are the kind to take me out. I’ve had two heart attacks in three years thanks to one so I’m not real certain how long before I exit this mortal plane. So not funeral not wake I’d prefer no tears but I’m a hell of a woman and an amazing wife and mother so I’m sure there will be lots of tears. However I want them to heal for a while then laugh because like you said grief and laughter sit at the same table and I want to feed one more than the other.
