Definitely the right move. Most patios are laid on a concrete crust - how can you guarantee your work if you can't guarantee the foundation.

I'd of got my Milwaukee fuel SDS drill, fitted my Milwaukee SDS bit and then drilled the concrete. measured the thickness using Milwaukee tape measure.
