Identity talks :
One thing I genuinely don’t understand is this: why do so many Africans still assume white people are automatically rich? You literally have millions of your own people living in Europe and America, bloggers, creators, podcasters, regular workers, all showing what life is actually like abroad. So where does this fantasy still come from?
I’ve asked Africans at my job before they came to the UK: what did you think Britain was going to be like? And then I ask them after they arrive: how long did it take for reality to hit? Eight out of ten told me: one month.
In 2024, I travelled to Ghana to meet my girlfriend, now my wife, and I saw it in real life. People approached me, even women, just because I’m white. They asked questions, assumed things, treated me like I must be wealthy. And I told them straight: there are white people in the UK who are uneducated, struggling, poorer than you. And guess what? Many didn’t believe me.
And the final question is always the most telling: when you call your relatives back home and tell them the truth, do they believe you? Ten out of ten say no. They don’t believe it. Because people won’t understand until they experience it themselves. The dream is stronger than the reality.
