As a tank commander on Leclerc I found it really interesting to have your point of having a crew of 4 ! The fact having the auto loaders is better at high speed on because of the consistency of loading within 6 sec on any fields at any speed, because we can fire 360 degrees at 70km/h I think it’ll be confusing for human loaders especially if you are considering the physical tiredness of the buddy who’s carrying rounds all day ! But it’s an interesting debate to have and I am looking forward to meet Abrahams commanders to go further in details !

Crew of 4 with a human loader is the best way. While fatigue is a thing, it’s easier to fight fatigue than an auto loader failure. Keep the tank as simple as possible to avoid mechanical downtime and keep us in the fight.

I think You missed a big part of why manual loaded guns (with united propellant+shell) have huge defensive/flanking advantage due to burst RPM (+FCS/IR/NV advantage).

The US might do what the french are doing and add a scouting element to their tank platoons

Id say autoloader Abrams and turn the human loader into a drone operator

I'm a retired tanker and I fully agree with you, I also feel a human loader is much faster and more reliable than auto loaders

human loaders reason being is shell selection with autolaoders have to cycle through rounds for the one you need, but with humans grab and up.

Autoloaders are Less reliable WAY more costly and carry lees ammo and a well trained manual loader can easily outpace an autoloader

Few people realize it, but the automatic loader can be replaced with an exoskeleton. An exoskeleton can also help with external work and can also be powered by the tank's electrical system.

Your points about the loader being important in terms of things that need to be done is huge.

i prefer a human loader as more effective in terms of speed but everything seems that new era west tanks are going autoloaders and some with crewless turrets

Automated loading poses a risk to the crew in case of direct injury.

Been on Leo’s for around five years. Thinking back to situations I’ve been in not once can I think I wish I had an auto loader. But if rolls were swapped I can think of dozens of times we’re I’m happy I had that 4 th guy

what about an interloader system? its still manual but always one in block and another ready to go. the concept was played with in the 70s.
