The “Kazakh village” scenes in Borat (2006) were actually filmed in Glod, Romania. Villagers later said they were misled into thinking they were part of a documentary about local poverty, not a comedy mocking them. Paid only about $3–$5 each, they felt humiliated by how the film portrayed them. Outrage spread through the village (one resident even vowed to attack Borat if he ever returned) and visiting journalists were often chased away with brooms or sticks.
