Imagine moving to America to build a better future, pursuing your dream of becoming a nurse, and then disappearing without a trace. This is the story of Irene Wairimu Gakwa, a 32-year-old woman from Nyeri, Kenya, whose family is still searching for answers. Irene moved to the United States in 2019. In 2020, she met Nathan Hightman while living in Idaho. The couple moved in together, and despite concerns from Irene's family that Nathan was controlling, they eventually relocated to Gillette, Wyoming, in the summer of 2021. Irene transferred to nursing school, hoping to build her future. Although she lived thousands of miles from her parents in Kenya, Irene remained close to them, speaking with them almost daily through WhatsApp. She also visited her brothers and their families in Idaho. Thanksgiving 2021 was the last time her family saw her in person. By February 2022, her relatives believed she and Nathan had broken up. They had no idea the two were apparently still living together. On February 24, 2022, Irene video-called her parents. Her father later recalled that she seemed unusually tired, but their conversation appeared normal. None of them knew it would be their last confirmed conversation with her. When Irene stopped answering calls, her family became worried. Then, on March 3, messages began arriving from her WhatsApp account. Something wasn't right. Irene normally used Swahili and Kenyan slang when texting, but these messages were written entirely in English. One claimed she was moving to Texas. Another said she'd dropped her phone in water and couldn't video-call. She repeatedly promised to call, but never did. Her family suspected someone else was behind the messages. After checking their shared phone records, Irene's brothers discovered she was still living with Nathan. On March 20, they reported her missing to Gillette police. Nathan told investigators that Irene had come home on February 24, packed her belongings into two black plastic bags, and left in a dark-colored SUV. But her family questioned why she would leave without telling them or why Nathan had never contacted them about her departure. Then investigators began examining what happened to Irene's accounts after she vanished. According to court records, Nathan accessed her bank account the following day, changed her password, and transferred money to himself. Investigators also documented thousands of dollars in credit-card charges. Her Gmail account was later deleted from a computer linked to him. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Nathan purchasing a shovel. Investigators also sought information about a 55-gallon burn barrel after receiving reports of possible burning around the time Irene disappeared. Authorities additionally asked for information about a silver Subaru with Idaho plates. Meanwhile, volunteers in Gillette organized searches on foot, by car, and on horseback, determined to help Irene's family find her. Nathan was convicted of financial cr!m3s involving Irene's accounts, but he has never been charged in connection with her disappearance. More than four years later, Irene remains missing. Her family still deserves answers about what happened to the daughter and sister they loved. If you have information about Irene Wairimu Gakwa's disappearance, contact the Gillette Police Department. Please continue sharing her story. #irenegakwa #missingperson #truecrimestorytime #truecrimecommunity #truecrime
