Werner Herzog famously said he only watches 1 film a year on average. Consuming a product doesn't make you an expert on how to make it. anyone who agrees with that comment please tell me which elements of star field would be better if the developers played more games. because from where im sitting Bethesdas issues seem more to do with talent bleed and technical debt than being in tune with the industry

A lot of people play games without understanding them so just playing isn't enough. You have to study a lot.

The reason that starfield sucks wasn’t because they “aren’t gamers” it’s because their entire work culture and their studio strucutre is completely distorted as a consequence of their team size massively expanding. Also Emil Pagliarulo

People that make games barely have time to play games because they are so busy making them. Playing a lot of games isn't a requirement to make good games. i.e Hideo Kojima.

yall know Ness from Super Smash Bros? well his creator and director of the Earthbound series was originally a copy-editor - and a quite famous one at that. he made 3 games, and now he sells stationary products, sometimes with Earthbound designs.

there are fantastic games made by non-gamers yes, but the best games are made by people who live in the culture of video games. Its a community thing, people who don’t play video games wont understand the culture of gaming and likely won’t engage with their community in the way that the community wants. Big corps do it constantly, releasing a promising game and then ignoring the entire community and letting the game die, other gamers don’t like to see their community die out because of bad communication and support

This is a terrible take. Book writers are encouraged to read book and those that do tend to be better at their craft. Same applies to musicians and film makers, so why would gaming be any different? Forget art this applies to basically any skill you could learn. So what exactly makes game dev so different?

Shenmue was famously praised BECAUSE the lead dev was someone who had never played games before but had a vision and was praised for being such an experimental concept for the time

Pretty sure everyone would agree Metal Gear Solid and Bioshock are some of the best games ever made, yet I'm pretty sure both were directed by people who don't actually play games that much

Yeah I have a good friend that works in the game industry. He's very good at what he does and will rarely sit down to play one himself. When he does it's a game like peak so it's not even close to what he works on

I feel like this should only apply if your are trying to adapt games into movies there’s plenty of people who are just gifted at a craft without having full interest in it doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing

It isn't the ground floor developer that are the issues. It is the people in control that are forcing a designed by committee making sure all checkbox are checked chasing the dollar and but she making a great game that gets them that dollar

obviously they should play some games but a team made up of a bunch of gamers mainly causes issues because they will play different genres and have different styles one guy will love stealth other will love destruction other driving and you have to find a way to make them all happy without making the game feel like it's just throwing in padding

you can see this with indie games where it's people who clearly like games a lot but have no interest in learning how to code well or design character models and art

Totally agree and disagree with different parts. I agree that the "they don't play games" label is to create a in and out group and also no one has any evidence for most of the time (do people really think most game Devs don't play games) so it's pretty stupid and in helpful. However if you ignore the fact it's a bad faith argument and respond to the statement "devs need to play games to make good games" in isolation I do think playing games is necessary to be good at making them, it's a very fast evolving medium so the idea you can keep up with the best mechanics in particular without playing is very unlikely. Maybe you can make a good narrative only game with a lot of other media but less games but for all other types of games you need to draw inspiration from everywhere you can so "playing games" is needed to make the best product possible.

I don't know how much it is the devs. but the people in charge of getting the game made. studio Leads and Executives. but I also think a lot of gamers don't understand that there are multiple levels to this. the Dev, Studio Leads, Publishers, are all not the same people.
