I almost didn't finish the first book because Jeff's voice for Carl almost had a "Goofy" quality to it. It definitely gets much better, but I complained to my friends for a while when I was listening to it.

Yes. Jeff was specifically apeing Patrick Warburton for the 1st book. During the 2nd book Jeff said he found himself pulled to another similar but less goofy voice.

That starts to go away. He initially models the voice after that actor but he eventually starts to find his own voice

I listened to a sample and couldn't get past a minute of that voice. It's on my tbr list that i have to read because I can't with that voice.

I read the books first before listening to the audio books - I had the exact same thought! It was really distracting at first. Seems to have mellowed out in the second though.

for the first book yes absolutely but after that I really do think it evolves into more of its own voice and I haven't even really made the comparison in a while. just finished book 5 recently

Yes. It’s intentional. Book 1 it wasn’t ever thought that it would get nearly as big as it did. Jeff hays wondered if he could keep up a patrick warburton voice of a whole book. As the series goes, it becomes more its own.
