Hiroshima & Nagasaki | Witness to the fall of the Japanese Empire ⚔️ August 1945: One of the darkest yet most crucial moments in modern history. The US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima Aug 6 "Little Boy" uranium and Nagasaki Aug 9 "Fat Man" plutonium. Both were carried by B-29 Superfortress bombers Enola Gay and Bockscar. Context: WWII in Europe ended after Germany surrendered. But Japan kept fighting hard in the Pacific. The US under President Harry S. Truman faced a hard choice. Operation Downfall, the planned land invasion of Japan, was estimated to kill hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers and millions of Japanese civilians. As an alternative, the US used its secret Manhattan Project weapon. Through the Potsdam Declaration in July 1945, the Allies demanded Japan surrender unconditionally or face total destruction. Japan ignored it. Impact: The bombs exploded 600m above each city. Hiroshima lost 70,000 to 80,000 people instantly. Nagasaki lost about 40,000. By end of 1945 total deaths reached 140,000 in Hiroshima and 74,000 in Nagasaki. Survivors called Hibakusha suffered radiation sickness, severe burns, and long-term cancer. Both cities were leveled in seconds by shockwave and firestorm. Result: Facing this new weapon and Soviet entry into the war, Emperor Hirohito announced Japan’s unconditional surrender on Aug 15 1945. WWII ended. The bombings also created a power vacuum in Asia that Indonesia used to declare independence on Aug 17 1945. And it started the nuclear arms race between the US and USSR, shaping the Cold War for decades.
