It’s also about empathy - everyone makes mistakes but corporate can be quite a hypersensitive paranoid place full of finger pointing. We’ve got to create psychological safety to enable people to develop & improve. You don’t do that by being blunt & forthright in criticisms.

The weird part is, the environments that openly tell you “this is shit” are generally more productive. My career sky rocketed, because I came from an environment where we’d tell each other openly if something wasn’t up to standard and why, no malice, just “we know you can do better”

This is good advice - and I’ll never be someone who says it’s not worth learning soft skills like this. That said - God when you say it (that the truth is too confronting in corporate) that way, I can’t help but hear that the bulk of corporate heads lack any real emotional resilience.

This can be culturally specific. There is a big difference on business communication in low context and high context cultures. In a low context culture if you wrap the truth too much it will fly over their heads. I work in a low context highly hierarchical country, unfortunately critiqie absolutely cannot travel upwards but when it travels down or sideways it's stated very direct and factually, and yes it does cause the same emotional reaction that you'd expect buttt, it wears off incredibly quickly and people get back to work, zero resentment
