As a Canadian, I operate on the assumption that ‘I don’t know what this person is dealing with’ whenever I make eye contact with a stranger. So I smile, and I say hello. I have no idea if that small connection will make any difference, but that easy task for me is worth it, if it makes a strangers day even a fraction better.

It has never occurred to me to leave Canada and live anywhere else. Travel, yes! Move…never. I know what we have here and I’ll never take it for granted.

I was very pregnant, and alone, in Edmonton 10 years ago. One night I needed Tums, so I went to the nearest 7/11. The greasiest, rattiest obvious drug addict opened the door for me, did a funny little bow, and said "after you ma'am" 😂🥰 gotta love Canada ❤️

45 yrs old. As a lifelong Canadian that's never lived anywhere but Canada, I didn't even realize that people could be unkind in the 'wild' until I traveled abroad. Not that there aren't unkind or rude people here, there definitely are, but it's so rare. Half my family don't live in Canada at the moment and it blows my mind that people live in places that are so unsafe.

One interaction if the New York State that really sticks with me and shows the difference in Americans and Canadians is I was grabbing taco seasoning in the grocery store and I had to go in between someone and their grocery cart which was 5 feet away from them to reach it, so as a Canadian I saw excuse me. The American lady goes excuse me! Excuse you! In the most aggressive tone. That was the day I knew I needed to move back to Canada.

It’s so strange yet amazingly heartwarming to me as a born and raised Canadian hearing these perspectives from those of you who have either moved here or are here for an extended stay. This is just life. It’s far from perfect but it’s all I’ve ever known

Whenever a stranger asks me for help, I get a little happy to think I can make their day better. (I hope so at least, though I’m so bad at directions 😅). I’m Canadian, so maybe that is something we kind of learn? I don’t know, but I’m glad you feel comfortable and at home here. 💕

Great explanation!❤️Thanks for sharing bc as a Canadian who has only travelled here and the states I always wondered why Americans are shocked when I thank a store cashier for change. And they don’t acknowledge it too they just say umm hmm and not your welcome like we do. It’s the small stuff sometimes eh?

I went to Switzerland and asked a cashier how her day was ( to my cousin sheer embarrassment) the poor lady almost cried like she had been waiting for someone to check in on her. my cousin informed me that small talk wasn't really a thing with strangers and I just wanted to practice my French

A couple weeks ago I stopped at a strangers house and asked if I could go inside to warm up with my baby as it was -30 out and he was crying from being so cold. She was so nice that she offered to drive us home 🥰

I realized this was a thing for Americans coming to Canada but I didn’t think it would be the same for Europe. I think a part of me has taken for granted how easy interactions are here. I can’t imagine living where I wasn’t able to just randomly start talking to someone in line at the grocery store and not worry about it at all. I really love Canada
