@drlucasdo: There are cases you forget. And then there are the ones that never leave you. In this video, I talk about one of the moments from my surgical training that still sticks with me — an ortho trauma case where I had to physically hold a leg that no longer had structural integrity. No bone. Just weight. Just gravity. Just reality. It wasn’t the gore that haunted me. It was what it represented. Medicine is beautiful. It’s meaningful. But it’s also heavy — physically, emotionally, psychologically. And no one really prepares you for that part. This is a story about responsibility, shock, perspective… and what experiences like that teach you about resilience, identity, and why burnout happens in the first place. If you’re a medical student, resident, or anyone curious about what the inside of medicine really feels like — this one’s for you. Study less. Understand more. And take care of your mind along the way. #medicalstudent #medschool #medtok #surgery #medschooltips #usmle #doctorsoftiktok

This same story could have been told with more empathy and less derogatory language in describing a patient’s condition. It is not professional to say a patient’s condition “super grossed you out.” Perhaps you could imagine that the patient was your mother.

I thought HIPPA extended to details that could provide enough information for a person to figure out who the patient was. Does that not apply here?

I don’t understand how people hate on DO, they’re doctors too and just as capable as MD. Best doctors I’ve ever met were DO

why were you tasked with holding her leg?? they must’ve known it would fall without any bone. why wouldn’t they just have a temporary sterile table underneath?😅

The teaching surgeon had you do that on purpose. Lol All med students have to do something they will never forget while in residency. It’s a rite of passage. lol

The best doctor I had was a DO, actually listened and supported my choice to manage crohns with diet. I had seen the improvement from two scopes 6 months apart but no doctor prior to her would acknowledge it. She reviewed both scans and she said it was incredible improvement. We both agreed if I started to have symptoms or tests/scopes started coming back poor, I would consider immune suppressing medication.

Then it was my turn! 2 knees and a hip replacement! I did great! My doc got best in the state! Now I’m fighting obesity because I have arthritis too!
