@ancienthistorytoday: Kailasa Temple (Ellora Caves) Carved directly out of a single basalt cliff in the 8th century CE, the Kailasa Temple at Ellora is one of the most ambitious rock-cut monuments ever created. Commissioned during the reign of the Rashtrakuta king Krishna I (c. 756–773 CE), it was conceived as a freestanding Dravidian-style temple dedicated to Shiva — yet instead of being built stone by stone, it was excavated top-down from living rock. An estimated 200,000 tonnes of stone were removed to isolate the shrine from the surrounding cliff face. The result is a vast courtyard dominated by a towering vimana (sanctum tower), subsidiary shrines, pillared halls, bridges, and sculptural panels depicting episodes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Shaiva mythology. Along the base of the temple runs a striking frieze of life-sized elephants. These carved elephants appear to bear the weight of the entire structure above them, symbolically supporting Mount Kailasa — the mythical Himalayan abode of Shiva. Their placement reinforces the illusion that the monument is constructed, even though it is entirely monolithic. The temple forms Cave 16 of the wider Ellora complex in Maharashtra, where Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain monuments stand side by side, reflecting centuries of religious coexistence and artistic evolution. #KailasaTemple #ElloraCaves #Ancient #History #AncientIndia

Ancient History Today :
The Kailasa Temple was carved from the top down, meaning the sculptors began at the summit of the tower and worked their way downward. This prevented structural collapse — but it also meant there was no room for major mistakes. One error could have ruined the entire monument carved from the living cliff.
