@leahshomestead: I made a fresh batch of bark tanning solution for my rabbit hides… and before I even put the hides in, mold formed across the top. The hides are NOT in it yet. So now I have a decision to make. Do I skim it, strain it, reboil it and try to save it? Or do I dump the whole thing and start over? This is real homesteading. Not everything goes perfectly. Sometimes you’re just standing over a bucket wondering if you’re about to ruin hours of work. What would you do? Skim and reboil? Or start fresh? #HomesteadLife #BarkTanning #RabbitHides #MeatRabbits #FarmSkills

no reason to risk it if it's not too difficult, or time consuming, to make new

Why not get the mold off and then re-boil what you have to kill anything that might be left behind?

I'd actually just try finishing the tanning. I can't see that a little mold will hurt anything. It'll get thoroughly rinsed away before you're done. Once the hide's dry, mold can't grow on it. There's mold spores all around us all the time, anyway.

You can use it. fermentation is a legit way of brewing tannin solution the boiling will sterilise it. Unless it smells too unpleasant
