@callmeblandine: In Haitian culture, “respè” is sacred. You give it automatically. You give it loudly. You give it with your posture, your tone, your silence. You do not look an adult in the eye for too long. You do not raise your voice. You do not explain yourself more than once. #tiktokayisyen🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹 #haitiantiktok🇭🇹🌷🌷abonné #Haiti #tiktokhaitienne🇭🇹🇭🇹
My mom was the opposite. She always to me "gade moun nan je lè yap pale avèw. ou pa zonbi!" RIP mommy.

We don’t raise kids to be confident in our culture. We raise people pleasers, door mats, victims, and people that sympathize with their abusers. It almost resembles the relationship between a salve owner and a slave. It’s almost as if, because of our history we see authority as synonymous with abuse.

Dang! I guess I was raising myself… umm actually I was. I looked everyone in the eyes, talked back… and definitely parented my parents by force AND by FIRE 🔥 I wasn’t tolerating none of their bs 🙄

That stuff gave me so much anxiety about eye contact as an adult. And I tend to overexplain because of all the trauma brought on by my Haitian parent.

My kids will be raised differently from how they raised me. I’m a people pleaser but I’m teaching my children to stand for themselves and learn to say no!

And those same people will tell you that you’re too quiet at 25. Because now you’re supposed to be charismatic and command every room

As a Jamaican this was also my experience, the adults in our lives don’t realize how much they operate just like the people who oppressed us

thats was my problem as a Haitian American. my family felt i was disrespectful because i decided to embrace the American way of life. Now teach my kids to look someone in the eye, check people, and defend yourself

I spent a huge majority of my childhood dealing with the consequences of not obeying. I’ve learned it provides me strength & free will, but in our community? Free will = danger, it equals evil, ego. It’s so hard to turn into a butterfly when someone is poking your cocoon.

This is the exact reason I was fired from my job and is the exact reason I’m having trouble keeping jobs now. People have constantly misinterpreted my behavior as something suspicious when I was simply doing what I was taught to do. I couldn’t put a name to that until now and it’s refreshing to hear you explain this so clearly. 😭

I’m learning how to undo this, allowing my children to use their voices, to break away from the generational trauma . But it’s always a challenge, but I’m open enough to to ask my children to correct my behavior, when they see those traits to call me out .
