In northern Illinois, a park ranger responded to a late-night call from campers who swore they heard a lion-like roar outside their cabin. The ranger tried to reassure them “there are no lions here”… until he turned and saw a massive cat that he insists was not a cougar or bobcat. It crossed the area and vanished into the trees. Police searched, found nothing, but the ranger still believes something is out there. Another northern Illinois story: a farmer heard deep roars from the woods behind his property and claimed he’d occasionally lose livestock—making him suspect a large predator was living nearby. Sure, they have them. You have them in zoos, but also people have their own collection of big cats. Remember during Covid there was a documentary out about " The Tiger King" who lived in Oklahoma with these large cats he bred and sold. Sometimes people do let these animals loose because they can't house them or they can't afford to feed them anymore.

Illinois has cryptids as well. Living in southern Illinois as a kid, I have seen a few things that I can't explain. I saw something once in the cornfield behind our neighborhood that I can only describe as a dogman. I didn't learn about that term for 40 yrs after the experience. Also saw what I think was a grey. it saw me too. The movie signs portrayed it perfectly. Need I say seeing the creature at the end had me about to defecate in the theater.

there are for sure pet lions that people don't want anymore and release. If they find a cougar in heat, there's no doubt they'll mate with it
