@lilikg13: Why do you feel taller after a Pilates session? The overarching answer is: skeletal alignment and support has been increased Within Pilates, we move the spine through flexion, extension, rotation, and lateral bending. We also support the spine in stable positions. The movement and support of our spine creates the illusion of “length and lift” because the spinal muscles are doing their job. They are holding the spine in its posture. We are connecting our mind to the engagement and support of these muscles, which creates the lengthened sensation. Pelvic alignment is another focus of Pilates. If the spine is out of alignment, 99% of the time, the pelvis is too. Through the active connection of mind-body to our pelvic alignment (whether that be anterior or posterior tilting, or pelvic rotation) Pilates can lead pelvic alignment back to its most supportive and proper placement. If our muscles were not supporting our bodies, gravity would pull our entire skeleton to the ground. Through activation and neuromuscular connection, our muscles support our skeleton and maintain our upright posture. This is what Pilates guides towards. It’s an active form of spinal decompression. This is why back aches and hip aches feel lessened after a session. This is why we do the work. #posture #pilates #spinalalignment #pelvicalignment #skeletalsupport
