As a retired RN-it’s quality of life vs. quantity of life.

This is so true. Extending life just because we can does not mean we should

I am grateful my mom was able to say she didn't want dialysis. I asked her do you want this? She said no. I was heartbroken and she knew exactly what that meant. She lived 95 beautiful years. I am so grateful for the time we had. After that decision was made she passed on peacefully the following day. I held her hand as she went on her journey.

We have Death with Dignity in I believe 15 states. One of my family members chose this. I am glad they were able to do it their way. Unfortunately, this is not available for Alzheimer’s/dementia.

The main ones benefiting from this “extended life of suffering, forcing an entirely depleted body to keep going” are pharmaceutical companies. The person’s quality of life is extremely poor, the psychological/physical/financial burden on loved ones is overwhelming, healthcare systems are struggling to keep up, etc all due to aggressive pharmaceutical campaigns to push life-extending medications.

I'm a caregiver for both my grandparents who have/had dementia. My grandpa was on hospice for 14 months. I did all that I could to make his days easy & enjoyable, not knowing how long I had with him. The last couple months it was extremely difficult to do that. I constantly second guess myself

I agree. Cared for my mom with lung cancer. She didn’t get treatment and lasted 2.5 months. We had a nice time at home hanging out and keeping her comfortable

Just inserting the fact that some patients want quantity over quality and those choices should also be respected. We all have different value systems and as care givers it’s still our responsibility to respect those choices.
