Ernesto "Che" Guevara: Revolutionary Praxis, The New Man, and the Contradictory Legacy of Global Anti-Imperialism The image of Ernesto "Che" Guevara—the bearded Argentine doctor in a beret adorned with a single star—is perhaps the most iconic symbol of 20th-century revolution, instantly recognizable as a figure of uncompromising defiance against imperialism. Far from a mere historical footnote, Guevara embodied a unique, often contradictory, blend of radical Marxist-humanism, disciplined military strategist, and utopian economist. His life, marked by triumphant victory in the Cuban Revolution and culminating in tragic defeat and execution in the Bolivian jungle, cemented his status not just as a revolutionary, but as a romantic martyr whose enduring legacy continues to fuel anti-capitalist and anti-colonial movements worldwide. Guevara’s transformation from an asthmatic, middle-class medical student into a global revolutionary began during his extensive travels across Latin America. Documented in The Motorcycle Diaries, these journeys exposed him firsthand to the crushing poverty, endemic disease, and vast social inequality wrought by centuries of colonialism and entrenched economic exploitation. This firsthand observation led to his initial, powerful conclusion: that Latin America was a single, oppressed entity whose liberation required a unified, intercontinental strategy. His political radicalization crystallized in Guatemala in 1954, where he witnessed the democratically elected, left-leaning government of Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán overthrown in a CIA-backed coup orchestrated largely to protect the commercial interests of the United Fruit Company. This event was formative, solidifying his deep-seated conviction that the United States would relentlessly oppose any progressive movement in the region. It was in the aftermath of this coup that Guevara committed fully to Marxism, concluding that the only path forward was through violent, uncompromising revolutionary action. The defining chapter of his life was the Cuban Revolution. Meeting Fidel Castro in Mexico, Guevara joined the 26th of July Movement and became one of its most capable commanders. His intellectual acumen and military discipline were instrumental in the guerrilla war against the Batista regime. Following the rebel victory in 1959—a victory secured decisively by Guevara’s command at the Battle of Santa Clara—he became a central figure in the new Cuban government, holding key posts, including President of the National Bank and Minister of Industry. This period was critical for developing his revolutionary theory, encapsulated in his seminal work, Guerrilla Warfare. Guevara’s contribution to military doctrine was the foco (focal point) theory, or foquismo. This doctrine posited that the conventional Marxist necessity for all objective conditions (economic crisis, mass worker mobilization) to be present before revolution could begin was false. Instead, a small, dedicated, armed vanguard (foco) could, through its actions and the subsequent repression it provoked, create the subjective conditions for popular uprising. He argued that the guerrilla force itself was the "motor" of the revolution. As a government official, Guevara pivoted from military strategy to political economy, adopting an anti-market, anti-Soviet model of socialist transition. He was fundamentally opposed to what he termed the "economic accounting" (self-financing and decentralized management) practiced in the Soviet Union and its satellites, which he believed relied too heavily on capitalist mechanisms like profit incentives, interest, and material rewards. In its place, he championed the Budgetary System of Finance for Cuban state enterprises, emphasizing centralized control and moral incentives. Central to Guevara’s vision was the concept of the "New Man" (El Hombre Nuevo), detailed in his 1965 essay Man and Socialism in Cuba. This was a fundamentally socialist-humanist ideal: # so support 💪for morepoetry
