As a nurse & someone who found their dad deceased, sometimes people are hermits & don’t want to be bothered. My dad was dead for 2-3 weeks before I found him. He was a biker and a truck driver. It was nothing for us to go weeks without talking. His friends went by his apartment, not knowing he was deceased (idk how they didn’t smell it), & when he didn’t come to the door, they thought, “Tommy doesn’t want to be bothered.” It’s definitely something we don’t forgive ourselves for.

My friend who lives 4 doors down is 65 yr old and I’m 57. We check on each other every 2 days to avoid these stories. Our kids don’t check on us regularly.

Because of my background, I am terrified of dying at home and no one finding me right away and…my animals eat me. 😰 Second, I worry about being home alone and choking. It’s crazy the number of people who choke.

I had a patient who sat on a couch for a few weeks (not neglect, I think depression) and ended up with the worst pressure injury i’ve ever seen. from her mid back to the top of her thighs was black. they put in a foley and gave her a colostomy just to keep it clean. i’ve never seen a wound so bad that they opted for an colostomy. had 2 debridements and a wound vac. you could’ve fit your entire fist in there that’s how deep it was. one of the saddest things i’ve dealt with.

Had a patient that had a puncture wound on their lower lip that wasn’t healing, and it was affecting the entire mouth area as well (Patient was homeless). The dentist came down to the ER to clean out the maggots that were crawling out of the patients mouth and wound on lower lip. Upon further inspection, there were several maggots found buried underneath the gums between the the teeth and gums. I had to walk away, the dentist had to walk away… we just couldn’t handle it.
