As a Dutch water engineer I’ve been there multiple times it’s amazing to see. In about like 30-40 years it has to be replaced because then it would have to close about 10 times a year which causes a lot of economic damage to the biggest port in Europe. So they’re already thinking about the next step. Will it be an even bigger one, will the dikes behind it have to be raised or will we just have to accept more risk. I think it’s very interesting to think about the future of watermanagement and what’s possible.

The Maeslantkering is gigantic. It is tested every year. It has only been closed once with storm Pia 21 december 2023. (It closes at 3 meters or more above sea level)

Not just flood. So nnot 'just' a shitload of water. It will withstand a 1 in 10.000 year storm. That is one extreme violent mother of a storm. We are talking windspeeds of 150 km/h with gusts of 200 km/h. Water levels 2 to 3 meters above normal max. Waves of 10 to 15 meters.
