Lalibela, Ethiopia – 11 rock‑hewn churches carved from living stone in the 12th–13th centuries by King Lalibela, creating a “New Jerusalem.” Home to the sacred Lalibela Cross, stolen in 1997, smuggled to Belgium, and returned in 2001. St. George Church (Bet Giyorgis) is the most famous — carved in a cross shape, entirely from solid rock, and remarkably well preserved. It’s an architectural and spiritual masterpiece, often called the crown jewel of Lalibela. A living testament to history, devotion, and awe. Special thanks to: @Face of Lalibela #Lalibela #Ethiopia #RockHewnChurches #WorldHeritage #StGeorgeChurch - @ika_around_the_globe
