7th Century Church with a hidden secret... St. Peulans Church is an archaeological wonder. The site was first noted being used for religious purposes in the 7th Century, when St.Peulan, a pupil of St.David and St.Cybi, founded the site. Nothing survives from the 7th century building, and what we see today dates from the early-medieval 12th century to the late-medieval 16th century. The church sits on raised oval-shaped ground, typical of a Celtic religious site, and a prehistoric standing stone, pointing towards the use of this site long before the 7th century. To get to the church, you must first walk over a raised causeway, created to make a dry path to the church when the surrounding fields flooded. Raised causeway were also built to separate sacred ritual sites from ordinary farmland. Inside the church is one of the most well-preserved pre-Norman fonts, bearing a remarkable Celtic cross and other Romano-british patterns. Only 3 sides of the font are carved. The fourth side shows slash marks, possibly either where swords and other blades were sharpened by warriors, or where some speculate that it was once attached to the wall and used as a ritualistic altar This is an incredible and welcoming church, looked after by the friends of friendless churches organisation, and well-preserves the ancient Celtic and early-Christian architecture and traditions of this ancient landscape. . . . . #stdavidsday #medievalchurch #welshchurch #northwales #celticarchaeology
