The legend of the Maroochy (or Maroochi) is a Sunshine Coast Dreaming story about a love triangle that explains the formation of local landmarks. The beautiful Maroochy was in love with the warrior Coolum, but she was stolen by the rival warrior Ninderry. The Conflict: Ninderry kidnapped Maroochy while Coolum was hunting. The Battle: Coolum rescued her, but Ninderry pursued them and killed Coolum by hitting him with a club, cutting off his head. The Landscape: Coolum’s headless body became Mount Coolum, and his head rolled into the sea to become Mudjimba Island (also known as Old Woman Island). The Transformation: For his crimes, the gods turned Ninderry into Mount Ninderry. The River: Distraught, Maroochy fled to the Blackall Ranges, where her tears flowed down to create the Maroochy River. She was later transformed into a black swan (in local dialect, murucutchi) to search for her lover's spirit. The legend is deeply tied to the Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi people and explains the geography of the Sunshine Coast.
