@funkypianoplay: I have worked in corporations for 25 years, and I have seen patterns you need to recognise 1. Workhorses: people who work their ass off You’re too useful where you are, and you clearly already love what you do so well. The company keeps you where you are, benefitting from your experience and call it ‘reliability’. You never get promoted 2. Truth tellers: people who say the truth publicly Even when you’re right, even if everybody knows you are right, even if this is a truth that needs to be told. But you make powerful people uncomfortable so you are perceived as danger. You don’t get promoted 3. Team players: people who play for the team. You are loving people you get to work with and it makes you proud of the team results… bla bla bla… it means you never truly market yourself, so others take the credit. You don’t get promoted 4. The Saints: people who follow the ethical rules You must be a complete idiot to think that everyone is playing by the rulebook. The higher you climb, the less ethical your job gets. So if you are ethical, you only end up being a pain in the ass for the real adults, so they don’t let you come even close to money and power. You do not get promoted 5. Ass lickers: people who mistakenly think they play politics but end up licking asses. You confuse politics with pleasing other people. You spend all your energy being liked instead of building allies. At first it looks useful. Then you realise that nobody cares about you, and you browned your nose just for fun.
