Ex-Mormon here. I left when I was 30. Yes the hardest part is definitely allowing yourself to question. Give credit to your own inner voice. But never have I felt so empowered of what it means to be my own man once I did.

Thanks for sharing. At 16 I went on a similar deconstruction journey myself.

I also grew up in a evangelical family of 12 and was homeschooled. My Dad is a pastor too. I left Christianity at 14 years old, and it was hard, but I don’t regret it, I’m a much better person now

Oh wow I had no idea. I had so much in common with you. I was also raised in the evangelical church and I was homeschooled. I left the evangelical Church in my early 20’s then in my 30’s I left the faith altogether. However I do hold a appreciation for the church and church traditions today being ash Wednesday I’m tempted to get ashes but I won’t

Same. Hubs went to seminary and taught me what he knew and it slowly unraveled.

Some of my favorite people are reformed religious folks. I definitely got that vibe. But I did not get the bakers dozen vibe, how cool!

Being homeschooled, to what do you attribute your critical thinking skills?

I’m gay, so I left for very obvious reasons. When I heard “I won’t say the Lord’s Prayer” by The Wonder Years and got to the line of “if Lot was righteous, I think I’d rather not be” it was sooo over for me.

Recovering Catholic here: none of the faith, all of the guilt. Never encouraged to actually read the bible or understand my faith. Definitely appreciate your ability to think independently.

I don’t believe in organized religion either, I grew up as a Jehovah’s Witness up until 37 yrs old. I just moved on.

I too was raised as a fundamentalist evangelical Christian…. And intended on being a minister as well. I was a very devout person, but I always struggled with reconciling this faith I was given at birth to the truth I knew about myself. So after I came out as Gay, it really put me on the journey of deconstructing my belief system, and now I am completely deconstructed and I find it hard to believe that I ever thought that way in the first place. Question everything, always.
