I think the whole point of this movie is that nobody is entirely right or wrong. Summer saying she wasn’t ready for a relationship should have been the sign for Tom that she wasn’t what he wanted and when Summer saw that Tom wanted more than what she was willing to give she should have ended things to avoid him further getting hurt. They sought after the wrong things in the wrong person
