I almost didn't post this because there were already, tons of videos on this topic. But every other video covers the what and completely skips the how. I'll break it down in the least technical way I can, so anyone can follow it. When we think of a watermark, we generally picture something like this on an image or a PDF. So with that understanding, we'd assume watermarking text means some cryptic characters or words that only an AI could read. Or invisible characters that we can't see, but AIs can. That's not the case here. You see, AI models like Claude work by generating one word at a time. Imagine Claude writing this sentence: I went to the market and bought some ___ It has several reasonable options: apples ← very likely, bread ← possible, milk ← possible Lets say it picks "apples " and there's some randomness in that choice. But if you generated the same sentence again, you might get: "bread" or "milk". To us as a reader, apple or bread or milk it doesn't matter which one it picks. The sentence mean the same thing either way. Now imagine Claude has a secret key. This secret key does not contain any information about the person or the organization who generated the text. Think of the key as a secret rulebook that only the AI company and its detector know. So instead of: words with ordinary randomness to determine the next word the system does something more like: previous words mixed with secret key with controlled randomness to determine the next word. Back to our example. The key doesn't say "Always choose 'apples'". Instead it helps decide which of the reasonable choice gets a tiny advantage in each situation. So from the previous group of words "milk" might be favored by Claude but that doesn't mean it will always be biased towards "milk". These choices occur many times over a piece of generated text that leaves a pattern in Claude's response. And these individual choices collectively form a watermark. From just one sentence it cannot be determined whether it was generated by Claude or a human wrote it. But with enough text the detector can predict the choices that are statistically consistent with the secret key. Imagine thousands of choices. If the sequence repeatedly matches what the secret-key mechanism predicts, the detector gets increasingly confident to say: This text is probably watermarked.#claude #claudewatermark
