Blindsight doesn’t scientifically prove consciousness is bad; it explores a speculative possibility that intelligence could exist without self-awareness. Evolution explains survival, not meaning. Consciousness is the very condition that makes truth, morality, love, and reasoning possible; including the ability to judge consciousness itself. Calling consciousness “bad” is self-defeating, because the judgment depends on the very awareness it tries to dismiss.

I’ve been thinking for a while about how consciousness is sort of a burden. I don’t think that’s scary, but it is pretty sad. We sort of just barely have the capacity to know we’re doomed and tell ourselves stories to make it all seem bearable.

That was the most profound bliss I’ve ever experienced. And that’s how I imagine it is to lack consciousness. Just reacting to the world in front of you

"highest beings on the evolutionary tree" in terms of what parameters? bacteria are easily the most successful organisms on earth. with no consciousness. but i wouldnt trade even a moment of consciousness for an infinite lifetime as a bacteria.

It’s so sad to see how much people are bored or fear consciousness. We’re literally a way for the universe to understand itself and instead of choosing joy, choosing love or choosing self-exploration as the experience to share in all of the meaninglessness, people see it as a burden or something to fear. Suffering exists, but so does happiness, community and shared experiences.

Speaking of consciousness, you would probably really enjoy the horror novella A Short Stay in Hell. It gave me terrible existential dread and made me think that maybe I don't want my consciousness to go on after I die. 😅

I guess I accidentally came to this conclusion on my own. Several years ago I just realized that it was probably just a really unfortunate mistake that we have consciousness and are aware of our existence and mortality. I’m still processing that.

The central question that motivated the Buddha was “why do we suffer?” He found the answer: conditional consciousness (samsara) is suffering, and the key is uncovering unconditional consciousness (nirvana), which is bliss.

The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat is. boo about bizarre neurological conditions and each one has a story about a person who had this or that condition. there was one where the guy was convinced that his leg was a cadaver leg and that doctors had replaced his leg with it as an experiment and that everyone was lying to him. reading his chapter messed me up so bad I didn't read any further. just realizing how horrifically our own brains can betray us messed me up. that was the scariest thing I've read.

Sounds similar to The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. It's also about first contact, and the Jesuits. Lots of real science, too. One of the more disturbing books that I've read!
