8 things I don't do with my money as a 25-year-old accountant. Comment the word
8 things I don't do with my money as a 25-year-old accountant. Comment the word "ISA" and I'll send you the full breakdown of my £290k+ portfolio for free 👇 1. Pay Deliveroo fees for food that's 10 minutes away. Delivery, service and small-order fees can add £5–£8 to a single order. Twice a week, that's hundreds a year. TIP: Collect it yourself. Most apps have a pickup option with no delivery fee. 2. Buy fast fashion I'll wear three times. A £12 top worn three times costs £4 per wear. A £60 one worn 50 times costs £1.20. TIP: Before you buy, ask yourself if you'll wear it 30 times. 3. Use Klarna for things I can't afford outright. If I need to split a payment for something I want, I can't afford it yet. Missed payments can also hurt your credit file. TIP: Save up for it instead. If you still want it once you've got the cash, buy it. 4. Get a car on finance just to look like I'm doing well. A £300 a month car payment at 25 is £3,600 a year leaving your account and going into an asset that loses value. TIP: Buy the cheapest reliable car you can pay for outright, and upgrade later with cash. 5. Gamble. Not even "just a tenner." It's the easiest way to lose money and one of the hardest habits to quit. It can follow you for years. TIP: Most UK banking apps let you block gambling payments in a couple of taps. Turn it on. 6. Wait until I "know enough" or "earn more" to start investing. The biggest advantage you have in your 20s is time, not money. Every year you wait is a year of growth you don't get back. TIP: Start small. Even £50 a month gets the habit going. 7. Leave my ISA allowance unused every April. You can put up to £20,000 a year into ISAs, and any growth or interest is tax-free. Whatever you don't use resets on 6 April and is gone. TIP: Set up a monthly standing order into your ISA on payday so it happens automatically. (Comment "ISA" to see how I use mine) 8. Keep my savings in a current account earning nothing. Inflation quietly eats money that sits still. TIP: Move your emergency fund into an easy-access savings account or a cash ISA. You can still get to it, and it actually earns interest.
