(1 Corinthians 14:33–35) The Catholic Church understands these passages, together with Christ's choice of twelve male Apostles and the uninterrupted practice of the apostolic Church, as indicating that the ordained ministerial priesthood is reserved to men. This understanding was consistently affirmed by the early Church Fathers, who taught that women could not receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders. This is not because women are inferior to men (indeed, the Blessed Virgin Mary is honored above every priest, bishop, and pope) but because the Church believes it is bound by the example of Christ, the teaching of the Apostles, and the constant tradition of the Church.
