@meghannmcuniff: A jury in Athens, Georgia, today convicted a 50-year-old man of murdering a University of Georgia law school student in 2001. Investigators arrested Edrick Lamont Faust in May 2024 after matching DNA at the crime scene to a DNA sample from Faust that was in a national crime database. The victim was Tara Baker, who was found dead inside her burning apartment in Athens on Jan. 19, 2001, a day before her 24th birthday. Investigators determined she had been beaten, stabbed and sexually assaulted before her home was set on fire to destroy evidence. Faust was convicted of aggravated assault in an unrelated case in 2001, and a sample of his DNA was entered into a database. The investigation into Baker's murder was reopened with money from a law passed in her name in 2023. Faust has been in jail since his arrest in 2024 and now faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison. The jury forewoman published the verdict after Judge Lisa Lott reviewed it. Lott presides in the Superior Court of Georgia's Western Judicial Circuit, which covers Athens-Clarke County and Oconee County. i’m so confused as to how anyone could think he was innocent his DNA was found inside of her body… inside of her body after there was evidence that she had been sexually assaulted… I don’t even want him to go to jail. i want the same thing that happened to her to him. i feel that’s real justice.
