@codependencykate: Replying to @inazar315 you CAN forgive them for being a child, forgive yourself for blaming/scapegoating them, hold your parents accountable for YOUR OWN WOUNDS of not protecting you, AND learn to protect yourself as an adult by having boundaries and going to therapy. I am SO SORRY this happened to you, it is NOT your fault
My mom let my brother abuse my sister and I. When he would hurt us, she legitimately asked what we did to provoke him.

as someone who experienced sibling abuse, it's vindicating to see you giving it credence. I always knew it was ultimately my parents fault. I always knew it was wrong, despite how much my parents and others have tried to normalise it

What about when the abusive sibling is The Golden Child?

My mother never disciplined my brother… as a small child I can remember calling her at work asking for help as he was abusing me. Even before I could speak, I would draw pictures of where he would hit me, etc. She never did anything to stop it. We are estranged and will always be estranged because of who he is and how he was allowed to abuse me with zero repercussions.

It took one of my parents dying for me to come to this realization. Bc my other parent expected me to emotionally comfort my sibling, to support them, to manufacture ways for them to feel useful in the aftermath. I couldn’t do that & also navigate my grief & manage estate logistics. It was the wake up I needed. I’m very slowly starting to repair my sibling relationship, but my relationship with my living parent may be destroyed 😔

The sibling abuse was some of the most traumatizing abuse I ever experienced as a child. My mom brought my abusive ADULT sibling back into the home when I was little and never kicked him out when he was violent to us. It was horrible.

My abusive sibling was not the scapegoat, I was bc I was hurt by my sibling and then hurt by my parents when I spoke up about it.

I finally got to family domestic abuse side . All my life my siblings hit me . Up to this day that’s how they resolve things

the scapegoat can also be unfairly framed by the golden child as being “difficult”, “deceitful” or “problematic”, so that they won’t be believed if they ever decide to speak out about the abuse. In my experience, an older sibling would write on furniture and blame it on me (he was too old for them to think he did it) so I had no credibility. I was called a liar for telling the truth when I denied being at fault. It was so insidious.

My siblings were almost worse then my mom, they were also all adults when i was a child and even admitted knowing i was being abused, but i only got even a shred of support when they just wanted to piss off my mom. My sister who had also experienced being suicidal? She forced me back to my mom when i ran away and confided in her that said mother had told me to kms.

As a mom who raised a child who still chooses to abuse as an adult, what you are saying isn’t always true. Personally, I did everything I could to figure out how to parent all of my kids well with the chaos we were enduring. The therapist said that they never seen along work harder. I did everything they told me to do and more. Their dad was abusive, and when I tried to leave the court, gave him 50% custody. His abuse and havoc in our lives and my son became violent because of that. It wasn’t my fault. I tried endlessly to get help a parent differently and the one child never chose to do the right thing. In fact, he tried to kill me and my other children. I wasn’t a bad mom.

My mom used to give my sister cigarettes and alcohol so she would go to her friends instead of beating the shïł out of me and emotionally torture me. She’s 13 years older than me and we have different dads, she hates my dad and blames me. The abuse started at 2 & 15 and anytime I see her at my nieces and nephews birthdays (different sisters kids) she still tries to publicly humiliate me and make me fear for my physical safety. I am almost 22.
