There will never be useless degrees. Going to college is about being exposed to different things so that you become a better thinker and learner. It’s why I had to learn the Pythagorean theorem not because I grew up to be a mathematician but because it taught me how to use and correctly apply formulas. So when I do my taxes, I know how to plug in numbers and have an idea what the answer is so that I know if the app has a glitch or I mis-typed something.

As a science major, I was angry that I had to take Communications. It ended up being the most important class that I took in all 7 years of a full time class load.

I went to university and got a creative writing degree (and then a general arts/policy/politics degree lol). MANY years later, I now have a job where I have to write documents to a 9th grade reading level breaking down complex legislation and policy. And I'm damn good at it. 🤷 The classic 'liberal arts' education teaches you how to understand, analyse and communicate, and that is valuable in EVERY job.

When I was at Uni most, if not all, students had to take one philosophy class during their first term. It would usually be divided into two sections. Introductions to philosophy and then philosophy specifically related to your field. The point of it was to lay the groundwork for critical thinking and ethics. Because no matter what your field will be you’ll need to have critical thinking skills and you need to be able to think about consequences and because sometimes we can’t solve a problem or test a theory because it is unethical. At the time it felt so annoying to have to take this random class, but now I understand.

We need to take classes about topics we are not familiar with because it broadens our understanding of others viewpoints. Some of the most interesting classes I’ve taken have been about gender, race, and other cultures. I would want my kids to learn ideologies that are different from what they know. If only to put the idea in their mind that every person provides unique viewpoints that can help us grow as a society.

I'm in STEM. I'm studying biology because I have things I need to research. I have theories that hopefully save lives. Before all of that, I was a history and anthropology major. when I switched majors, everyone told me how happy I was leaving my "fake" degree program for something "safer". I still use the information and skills I gained from my history and anthropology classes. Not in university, but in every day life. Social sciences and humanities classes and majors are just as vital as any STEM class. We would not have had ANY advancements in STEM, if it were not for the skills, tools, and applications of non-STEM disciplines.

I remember being angry about having to take English and Writing courses when I was a freshman in college. I wanted to be a nurse, so I felt like I didn’t need it. Now, I couldn’t be more thankful that I took those, being well rounded and having those skills are so important. Especially today!

It makes me sad. When I was university age 15 years ago, I loved Women’s and Gender Studies. My major was psychology but I loved reading as deeply and widely as the feminists do. 🥰 It was a breath of fresh air to step outside the experimental / lab-based paradigm.

I got a bachelor’s degree in history, and I had an ENTIRE class on how to interact with and interpret sources of info—what a primary vs secondary source was, what sort of questions can actually be ANSWERED by a particular source (& just as important, what questions CAN’T)… and I remember thinking… “this feels like the kind of thing we should be teaching EVERYONE. Preferably before they’re old enough to vote.”
