Lena didn't like surprises. Surprises were simply proof of poor preparation. As she zipped her winter coat all the way up to just under her chin, she glanced at her sports watch. 07:42. Right on schedule. Outside it was two degrees below freezing, but inside her small studio apartment the air was heavy with the smell of freshly brewed filter coffee and oatmeal. On the counter her bag was ready: a sturdy, waterproof backpack containing her ID, three blue pens that all wrote just as finely, and her laptop. Her shiny, brand-new laptop, which she had slaved away for every free hour over the past three months at the local supermarket. On that laptop her entire life was coded into neat folders. And, more importantly, the summary of four hundred pages of medical anatomy. Today was the day. The entrance exam for the master’s program in Physiotherapy & Emergency Care. The gateway to her future. She walked to the mirror in the hallway and tucked a stray strand of her dark hair behind her ear. "You're prepared," she said out loud to her own reflection. "You know the Latin names of every bone, every muscle, and every tendon. Nothing can go wrong." With a controlled movement she picked up her bag, slung the straps over her shoulders, and fastened the chest strap. Safety above all. She double-checked that her bike key was in her right pocket, locked the front door, and walked down the stairs with firm steps into the cold outside air. The cobblestones glistened with a paper-thin layer of black ice. Lena got on her city bike and started pedaling. Her breath formed little white clouds in the freezing air. She knew the route to the university by heart: exactly twelve minutes by bike if she caught the traffic light at the canal. She tucked her hands deep into her thick gloves and pushed down hard. Everything was going according to plan. On the other side of the neighborhood, Mui was walking. Mui _did_ like surprises. In fact, her whole life was one big, unplanned sequence of events. Right now she was walking down the sidewalk with a gigantic, brightly colored scarf wrapped around her neck three times, while her young shepherd dog, Storm, tugged enthusiastically on the leash. In her left hand Mui held a cardboard cup with a steaming oat latte, and with her right hand she was frantically typing a voice message on her phone. Her best friend had a broken heart, and Mui refused to leave her hanging, even though it wasn’t even eight in the morning yet. "Yeah, but listen," Mui said loudly into the phone’s microphone, while kicking a patch of snow away with her foot. "If he’s not even replying to your texts now, then he’s really not worth your energy, Saar. Seriously, dump the guy. We’re going to eat ice cream tonight and..." Storm suddenly spotted a big, brazen magpie sitting across the bike path. The dog gave a sharp tug on the leash. Mui, whose mind was completely focused on Saar’s heartbreak, lost her grip on the leash. The leather strap slipped out of her glove. "Storm! No! Here!" Mui shouted, almost dropping her phone. The dog didn’t even hear her. With his tail in the air he shot in a straight line onto the slippery bike path, right in front of the wheels of an approaching cyclist. Lena only saw the dog when it was already too late. A flash of brown and black fur suddenly cut across her path. Her reflexes took over. "Watch out!" she screamed, as she squeezed both handbrakes with all her weight. It was the worst possible decision on a frozen road. Her front wheel locked immediately on the thin layer of black ice. The bike skidded to the left, and Lena felt contact with the ground disappear. The world turned a quarter turn. With a dull thud she slammed sideways onto the asphalt. Her knee took the first impact, followed immediately by her shoulder. But the worst sound came next: a hard, plastic crack from her backpack, which had hit the frozen pavement at full force.
