there is no priority until the upkeep at the start of a turn. so you cant flash in the vise before the upkeep, as its the soonest anyone has priority.

Unfortunately you can't do this. Upkeep triggers will already be on the stack, the earliest you could cast your flash is after upkeep triggers are on the stack, and they'd take no damage this turn.
